Training Seramas

It's the last show season proved that there is  uncertainty  regarding
the training of Seramas for a show.
Roosters who do not want to stand and many hens who are pressed flat
on the table and so totally not 'showing', while they did show it in the cage.
This has reduced the rating  much lower than expected.
Therefore, at the request of the judges and breeders , clues to train Seramas.

You can start training Seramas quite young . Around the fourth month, when
the first  selection took place(Bad combs, , tail not right, wings to long,
short legs,  etc) we begin training.

To train Seramas we take some from the group and put them temporarily
in a smaller cage (I put them two by two in a cage 60cm-60cm)
We train about 4 minutes each time and we do it every other day or two

For the training, we use a red-brick  flowerpot or as I, use an  food bowl of a
guinea pig up side down, or anything else, cover with a cloth or a
piece of carpet agains slipping.
The to use objects must not be too high and so narrow that  the wings can
hang down beside them,  because the wings at this age are still too long.

First time, put the Serama
on the cup / bowl It is intended
that he / she stays on.
Get your hands further away to
see if he stays on.
Success? As a reward put the
Serama back in his cage
So we can take the next  to
begin.

1 or 2 days later, put theSerama back on the bowl
Does he / she stay on, give a reward such as a mealworm.
Then back in the cage. Just wait a while and repeat everything.

Between training sessions  take the Seramas regularly in your hand, just
stroke and let him sit on your arm, So they get used to handeling.

The third session, if all goes well, the Serama will stay some time sitting on the      bowl. Now they must learn to show  better, To help him we stroke
the wattles or rub on the chest.
Most males respond well to this.
Give them a light pressure so he will
bring back the head .
Hens would sometimes considerably
protest, some males also

Don’t give up.
Push the head back  a little
take your hand off.
Success? Then follows a reward

4th session; Put the serama back on the bowl and repeat the
3th session, they will often already hold there head back.

Now is the time  to bring the selected Seramas back into its group.
Take the trained Seramas regularly in your hands. Take them inside and put      them on the table, and then we just get going. Children running around,
music on, visitors sitting by the table, and in between  just put on a little table
or an up side down  flowerpot, and try to touch them all over

If the Seramas are   5-6 month put the trained Serama in a smaller cage  again.
Now we put them on a higher table or flowerpot.
Put the Serama back in show stand and bring the head back.
Reward if he does well. It will immediately look a lot better, because the      Seramas have grown now, the wings can be worn vertically.

1 or 2 days later train again the same There is now a proud Serama
on the table that you can go to the show with.
Easy to handle, and trained to stand.
This provides some points more quickly now that he shows his chest and as      he looks beautiful, nature can also score the better.

So you see again, with a little effort the results are stunning

It takes a lot to let them stay

on

Stroking the wattles works
